A PSA From Your Body

It's going around but with good reason: Michelle finalized her PSA from your body. It's marvelous. Go see it.

I have to share my reaction--what a fabulous piece!

It prompted two things in my day yesterday. First, I forwarded the blog link to all of my non-SA related friends (something I don't normally do). I was absolutely amazed but not really surprised that there was NO reaction other than a couple of people who couldn't find Maria Callas. NO REACTION! I know, they feel threatened (regardless of their size), but I so wanted at least ONE person to say "wow, I feel good about me when I think about the message of that video." Nope.

Second, I found myself watching people at the grocery store. Not judging sizes or appearance, but just appreciating who they were from what I saw of them: the healthcare worker in rumpled scrubs, obviously tired at the end of her long shift; the guy wearing a sports-team insignia on just about every part of his body (go team!); the mom with a little toddler riding in the basket and the mom was wearing a short tight skirt and stilletto heel boots that made MY feet cringe (I wondered how she runs after Junior in those?); the store manager who was cleaning up the produce aisle, looking uncomfortably hot in his shirt and tie, probably wishing he could be wearing a tee-shirt; the teenage parochial school girl in her plaid skirt and knee socks, with eyeglasses trimmed in rhinestones, flaunting her individuality in the face of a uniform dress code. Their bodies were getting them where they needed to go yesterday, and I wished they all could see the PSA and feel good about who they are too.

Wow, you're observant pocomommy! I like the way you described all the different bodies doing different things, being comfortable/uncomfortable in various ways. Almost like a social experiment.

And thank you for forwarding my PSA (I'm Michelle, a.k.a peggynature, a.k.a has-too-many-internet-names) even if you didn't get the response you were hoping for. Maybe it's still sinking in?

It might encourage you to know that, yesterday, I presented it to a bunch of nutrition students, most of whom have probably never heard of fat acceptance or HAES, and I got a great reaction. They appreciated the use of 'real' people who were not professional models or digitally altered, who looked happy and comfortable with themselves, and they liked the positive message. I was flabbergasted -- I'd expected to be chased out of the room for "promoting obesity" or something, but quite the contrary. Maybe more people are ready to hear this kind of message now than they have been in the past? One can hope!

I am so glad you got a great reception for your video with those students! Yay! I am doing my happy dance all over the house for you!
