Walking 12 Miles to School in the Snow...
A spanking-new UK study shows that driving kids to school versus having them walk doesn't make them fat. This doesn't say that walking in general is bad, but as the number of kids who were driven to school in the UK nearly doubled in the past eight years, it was seen as a possible culprit. (ie, "We'll blame anything!")
So that takes care of being driven to school. What happens when studies show that playing video games and using computers for x hours a day don't affect weight, either? [Thanks, Jeannine!]

Recently in my neck of the
Recently in my neck of the woods, there was a HUGE uproar because the schools were thinking about cutting schoolbus service for kids that live within 1 mile of the school, to save money. You should have SEEN the parental uproar! Personally I'd love it if they'd cut it, because they kids would have to walk or ride their bike ONE FREAKING MILE, I mean HOW HARD is THAT? I do it to get a newspaper, for frick's sake!
And then they bitch because their kids are inactive? You CAN'T encourage inactivity and then EXPECT activity! I'm sorry but suburbanites sometimes really strike me as lazyass people, be they fat OR thin!

Why can't their parents or
Why can't their parents or someone else *drive* them to school? I know where I am, my kids will never, ever walk or ride their bikes to school... not because it is too far, but because the City, in its infinite wisdom, decided not to place sidewalks along the route. They also didn't see fit to place lights or, at the very least, a crossing guard along a very busy 4-lane road the kids would have to cross to reach their final destination. The bus does stop at the end of our street, but I choose to drive them myself (bus without seatbelts is an entirely different issue!).
I don't know about where you are living... maybe it's different. And I do agree to a certain extent about "suburbanites"... some parents have a set plan for the day and taking their own kids to school simply isn't part of it. Not so much lazy as inflexible. Of course, there may be time issues for working parents...
