Debora Iyall

In case you don't recognize that name, Debora Iyall was the lead singer of 80s band Romeo Void ("Never Say Never.") Last night, VH1 aired an episode of Bands Reunited featuring Romeo Void in which it was revealed that the band was dropped from their label because of Debora's weight.

BFBer and Blogger Alum Cat wrote and said that the overall treatment was a positive one. "It was also clear that the other band members absolutely loved and accepted her the way she was. Iyall was depicted as talented, intelligent--even sexy. I was duly impressed. Chalk up one for the good guys."

Great deal. The show is coming up many more times, so fire up your VCRs and TiVos. In the meantime, if you've seen the episode, feel free to post your thoughts!

I was really pleased with the episode, too. I loved how absolutely uncompromising she was, saying something to the effect of "this is who I am, I love who I am, and I wasn't going to change it because some record executive didn't like it." Another band member told a story about how big label scouts/execs came out to see the band and possibly offer them a recording contract, and as soon as they saw her take the stage, they walked out. Bven though he did sort of pass it off as "well, that's the industry," it certainly registered that this shocked and offended him. And I was really happy that when she reunited with another former band mate that she hadn't seen in ten years or so, one of the first things he did was look straight in her eyes and tell her how healthy she looked. What a breath of fresh air. Good viewing, for sure.

Punk rock really was a revolutionary movement there for a little while. I have a horrible crush on Debora Iyall. Plus I want to be her.

Debora Iyall always rocked my world. I remember the first time I ever saw the video for "Never Say Never" and saw this beautiful, goddess-type woman singing "I might like you better if we slept together" and thinking how absolutely rare and odd it was. I wondered what happened to them, and now I find out that they got the Heart treatment -- lose weight or you can't sing anymore. (Argh!) Thank goodness Debora resisted going the Ann Wilson route and has stayed healthy and happy despite industry blindness. Rock on. I have set my VCR to keep this episode for posterity.

Where Ann Wilson had band mates who were bitter and abusive over her preventing them from being famous, Debora's were clearly at least hands-off if not tentatively supportive and resistant of pressure. The special was just great in everyway and I hope everyone gets a chance to see it. It dealt with Debora's weight in an honest, respectful, and straight-forward manner. It didn't dominate the discussion, but was addressed in a genuinely positive manner. And man, were they a great band.

I am glad that this was so well-handled. Dee is indeed a terrific, self-accepting, fat-accepting woman, & an excellent role model for us.

Gee guys, I've heard turtlegurl mention you at Fat!so? before, but never checked it out until last night. I did a search for my name (curious about what's out there...) and low and behold, a nice little dsicussion about my band and the VH1 special. Yes, I am the fat chick singer from Romeo Void! Still singing, still fat :) I felt good about the way the show treated the issue of my size. Hopefully most viewers were educated and or enlightened by my attitude if they didn't already share it Big Fat Blog is great, thanks Paul for the excellent forum. Greg, thanks for the adoration and if you want to be me, I could give you a few tips on essentials ;)
