'Real Women Have Curves'
The film Real Women Have Curves has been getting a lot of attention lately for its story, message, and lead actress, America Ferrara. It's based on a play by Josefina Lopez. Roger Ebert liked it, and this excerpt sounds great:
Ana's boyfriend, Jimmy, tells her, "You're not fat. You're beautiful." She is both. "Real Women Have Curves" doesn't argue that Ana is beautiful on the "inside," like the Gwyneth Paltrow character in "Shallow Hal," but that she is beautiful inside and out--love handles, big boobs, round cheeks and all. "Turn the lights on," she shyly tells Jimmy. "I want you to see me. See, this is what I look like."I can't wait to see it. Other BFBers have commented on it in other threads - if you've seen it, feel free to pop a review up in this thread.

It is nice to see Hollywood
It is nice to see Hollywood finally using plus-size actresses in decent roles, and in films that have a positive message overall. I'll definitely have to see this. I did a quick search and read a few more reviews. Except for the fat bigots, the reviews I've read were generally positive. I may end up waiting to see it until it comes out on DVD -- there are way too many good movies coming out this fall, but it does look very interesting. :)

I have heard through the grapevine that Ebert's a bit of an FA. Dunno how true that is or what the basis for the rumour might be, but hey, works for me.

Apparently, Lopez had similar studio wars over this movie as the folks behind "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". And, ahem, looks like she won.
