More Diluted Drug Interests

There are many drugs available for depression, as there are now many available to assist those who are overweight. Some of the drugs on the market being sold as weight control drugs were actually created to treat depression; the weight control aspect was just a "happy" accident.

So, you can imagine my surprise when I read that a drug for depression and nicotine addiction helps people lose weight. It all sounds mildly interesting - there are the usual "diet and exercise equals real long-term weight loss" claims - until you see this:
The study, reported in July's Obesity Research, was paid for by the drug's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline.
Ridiculous. This type of moneygrab really annoys me, yet newspapers continue to claim it's newsworthy. It's just an ad, and it's going to give more people false hope.

What nonsense. I took Wellbutrin for two years. It did not help me lose weight, nor did it help me with depression. I did not experience the side effects (dry mouth, diarrhea) but I would imagine if anyone did experience them it might make them disinclined to eat! Though as we all know, eating less seldom equates to weight loss, and can quite often even have just the opposite effect; a starving person's body does whatever it can to retain caloric intake. It's a survival measure. And also the reason why dieting is so counterproductive for people trying so desperately to shed pounds.
