Big as Life
Sorry for the short notice on this, but tonight next Sunday on the Discovery Channel is Big as Life: Obesity in America. The Washington, D.C. chapter of NAAFA was involved in the making of this special, so my hopes are a little higher than normal. The date of this special appears to have changed, so this post was updated.

erm. Glad this is on the air, but - From the Web site summary: "Witness the pain and surprising joy" of obese people's lives...
O-kaaay. That's not too condescending!

I was incredibly moved by one of the women followed in this documentary (although all had interesting tales to tell). For those of you who have seen it, she was the woman who lost a couple hundred pounds, went on the Richard Simmons show, returned home and proceeded not only to regain the weight but to gain substantially more than she had originally lost (sound familiar?). As the weight returned she took photographs, which I found incredibly moving and profound. Does anyone out there recall her name, know how to contact her, or know if these photographs are available for purchase? They haunt me -- her talent is just so impressive.

I saw the show and I thought
I saw the show and I thought most of the depictions of the large size acceptance groups (halloween parties/fashion shows) were cartoonish and used the documentary filmmaker's tactic of "give em enough rope and they will hang themselves". In other words, they basically said "here's what the fat kids do when you're not looking" and showed freakshow footage. nice.

I was more alarmed by the
I was more alarmed by the filmmaker's hysterics after the Medical Professionals segment: Obesity Epidemic! Impending Disaster! And yes, I believe at one point they did actually say with unintentional humor, Fat People Are Exploding!
OTOH, I'm pretty sure I've seen this before a few years ago, and I believe it was my first inkling that NAAFA and the fat-acceptance movement existed.
It's a mark of how my perceptions have changed since that the photographer lady now looks "wrong" and haggard to me in her 'thin' pictures. (Ditto to someone else's comment on the Renee Zellweger pix item above this one.)

Today is Nov. 25, 2002 and
Today is Nov. 25, 2002 and last night, by sheer happenstance, I saw the "Big as Life" on Discovery channel. When Doris made her appearance my jaw dropped to the floor. I grew up with Doris in Norfolk (many years ago) and we were friends until relocations on my part made me lose track of her -- about 15 years or so ago.
I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart that Doris has always been a fantastic artist and wonderful writer. She is funny, witty, honest, intelligent, ambitious (almost driven), and caring. I am thrilled to see that she hasn't "given up" on life and that she continues to pursue her many goals, but expecially those goals of artistic excellence.
Doris, Prosper and Live Long!!!!
