Worse Than Smoking?
The latest media blitz claims that obesity is worse than smoking - smoking! - and people are all over it. The article throws many numbers in the reader's direction without accounting for them (are people being admitted to the hospital simply because they're fat? are there simply more fat people?) and then brings in Ol' Reliable: diabetes.
Thus, this article and media coverage is nothing more than an attempt to scare even more people into shelling out money for the diet industry which, I might add, advertises heavily on MSNBC's Health section - where I'd first seen this article. Don't buy into the BS, folks.
"Obesity is associated with a lot of chronic conditions, which have a large impact on health costs. Diabetes needs constant care," Sturm said.Note, however, that those two thoughts are independent of each other. And, astute BFB reader Michelle notes that the BMI scales were changed to throw more people in the 'overweight' group back in 1998.

Speaking of that stupid BMI
Speaking of that stupid BMI thing, I think that the whole thing should be replaced by a better measure of obesity. I work out 4 times a week, and weigh 185 pounds at 5'9". According to the BMI measure, i'm obese, and yet i'm at 4% percent bodyfat, and i'm currently modeling. Actual scale weight has nothing to do with anything in my opinion. It is the actual composition of the body(fat/muscle) which should determine obesity. Just my two cents.
