Acceptance Catching On

Sandy and Mavi sent over this article from The Clarion Ledger that suggests fat acceptance is catching on. All right!

With 329 pounds on her 5-foot, 6-inch frame, Kristie Agee is fat. "It's just a characteristic like having blue eyes or being white or being black," the 28-year-old singer-songwriter says. "I see it as part of who I am: I'm fat."

Agee found NAAFA, and the rest is history. She's fat and active, and best of all, happy with herself. It's great to see this coverage in the media!

Yea!! What a great article. I'm glad they showed the picture, too. She's beautiful.

fantastic. Sometimes coming here is exhausting, reminding me of all the negative stuff out there...and so I especially love these positive ones, paul. she not only "considers herself" fat and fit, she looks it! (Since MDs can diagnose people by only looking, so can I, lol.)

I loved this article. It has almost none of the "this person is healthy but...." stuff found in most articles. What a lovely picture of the two of them.

The article was definitely refreshing. But the last paragraph backslid a bit, by mentioning Kristie's before and after weight. It missed the point that fat acceptance is its own reward, and that accepting and loving one's body may result in lost pounds and it may not. Weight loss is not the point. Still, the article presented a welcome voice in the wilderness.

It IS great to see articles like this in the media. Maybe we'd see a lot more if we were to reward the journalists who write them. With that in mind, I looked up the Courier Journal online and found you can email letters to the editor at www.courier-journal.com/cjconnect/edletter.htm They have a form for you to fill out; word limit is 200. Join me in praising Sameh Fahmy and interview subject Kristie Agee. (I promise I've never even met either of them).

I enjoyed that article, she carries her weight well, wish I could be as accepting of myself as she does herself. RR
vidyapriya July 12th, 2005 | Link | I really liked the fact that
I really liked the fact that the article focused on *her* perceptions of herself, and did not try to immediately counter them with the 'official' lipophobic discourses. None of the usual deny-a-voice-to-the-fat nonsense. Nice, too, that nothing was said about the canes/walking sticks which she is shown using in the article; any marker suggesting 'fat-related disability' generally brings out the rabid fool in antifat journalists. BTW, I'm new here. I've read most of the archives, and love BFB!

Yeah, great to see a postive piece. These are my favorite kind on this site too. So many negative ones are draining.
