MeMe Roth is Made of Crazy

Look at this poor woman. Doesn't it look like maybe she needs a big ol' fat hug? I concur.

The thing I like about MeMe Roth is that she is such an easy target. She wears her hatred and her bigotry on her sleeve, has no good advice to give, and 99% of the time comes across to even fat-phobic reporters as bat sh*t crazypants. Aside from the fact that she is all about the fat hatred, there are two things I don't like about MeMe:

1. She gets a lot of attention from the media for her anti-fat blather
2. I am starting to really feel sorry for her

I mean, how could you not? She's so delusional! She insists she's not anorexic, in fact says she's "never been on a diet", but then in the next breath talks about how she doesn't eat breakfast, forces herself to work out before eating during the day, and finally admits that, the day of the interview, which occurred at 3:30 PM, she hadn't eaten at all! Sounds like disordered eating to me.

The article says her (fat) family finds her crusade to be hurtful, so I can imagine that family get-togethers are probably strained and uncomfortable for everyone involved. On second thought, I really feel sorry for her kids. MeMe comes across as so cold and controlled that I can't imagine she's all that warm of a mom. Not to mention what hell it must be to grow up in a house where no one eats. I hope I'm wrong about that, but I bet I'm not.

She just seems so intensely unhappy, so rigid, so devoid of joy that I can't help but feel empathy about the lifetime of hurtful experiences she must have gone through to get to this place. That woman does NOT like herself. Not even a little bit. Sure, I absolutely hate everything she stands for and most of the time I really wish she would just stuff a sock in it, but the sad little fat girl inside me recognizes that the sad little fat girl inside her really just needs some love. I hope one day she finally gets it.

Thanks Jenny!

You're welcome, Carrie!

MeMe has one weakness: Coke. Someone should bribe her with a can of it every time she eats a complete meal.

I also want to take her kids home and feed them!

"The defence has been made in the case of sex criminals that there is pleasure on the part of the victim. The same is true with what we're doing with food. We may abuse our bodies with food, but it's incredibly pleasurable. From a food marketer's point of view, when your quote unquote victim is so willing and enjoying of the process, who's fighting back?"

She didn't actually SAY that, did she? What? WHAT???

May 28th, 2009 | Link | Hi all. It's been a while

Hi all. It's been a while since I've written anything anywhere, much less on the Fatosphere. Forgive my long absence and likely brief return. I just couldn't let Ms. Roth zip by too quickly, knowing that her modus operandi is to distract people with repeated jabs at the OMG TEH FATZ!!!11!! panic button, so that they won't pay attention to her flawed logic. Were I able to dedicate a few hours to it, I feel certain I could write up a lengthy outline detailing all the fallacies in just this one article (it would take a year-long sabbatical to do the same for her entire repertoire). Luckily, the whole internet has seized on the particulars of this article, especially Ms. Roth's insane comparison of food to rape.

So I'll just address one comment. In the article, Ms. Roth is quoted as saying, "And it's Darwinian. This isn't just my opinion: males with obesity have lower sperm counts and sperm motility; females have higher rates of infertility, higher rates of pregnancy complication and a higher rate of birth defects. So don't listen to me, listen to Darwin!"

It's hard to know where to begin, addressing this comment. First off, show us the money on these "statistical" rates you're quoting. What scientific research has proved that fat people have more fertility problems? Secondly, I don't believe that Darwin said anything about fat people being less fertile or having more pregnancy-related trouble. These sentences strung together in this manner imply that. And thirdly, if you're going to assert Darwin, understand what that means and how it applies here.

Following the conventional wisdom (and with an appreciation that he was much more than this single theory, and that this single theory has, itself, evolved), mentioning Darwin means "natural selection" and "survival of the fittest." In a nutshell, those who have the strongest genetic traits to best survive the cold, harsh world live long enough to pass those strong genes onto their children. Over the course of generations, those traits become common, and the genetic traits that do not advance the goal of continued procreation eventually disappear.

I believe that Dawin would assert that the tendency toward increased body size means that it is most beneficial for humans to be bigger than their predecessors. This concept is borne out through both dramatically increased life expectancy and an ever-increasing human population.

This brings us to the Obesity Paradox -- a phenomenon eloquently explained by Sandy Szwarc of Junkfood Science as "the the fact that most fat people actually live longer than thin people." (Read her whole series on it. Heck, read the whole blog.)

Oh and by the way, all this flies in the face of the notion that fat people, universally, have reproductive issues. Seems to me that they're doing just fine having babies -- passing on those strong, fat genes to the next generation.

So, Ms. Roth. You're right. I will listen to Darwin. Maybe you should do the same.

lilacsigil May 28th, 2009 | Link | That's a lovely dissection

That's a lovely dissection of the misuse of "Darwinian".

Additionally, there is a correllation between being fat and being infertile - not because fat causes infertility, but some conditions (PCOS is the most common example) cause BOTH weight gain AND infertility. The fat does not cause the infertility. Being thin, however, can in itself cause infertility.

May 28th, 2009 | Link | A woman who does not allow

A woman who does not allow herself to eat until she gets a 4 mile run in that day is bound to find food incredibly pleasurable and hard to resist, yet she tamps down her natural instinct to nourish herself in the name of thinness. Which is absolutely her right, I don't deny that, but to demand the same of other humans is just not clear thinking. I hope one day she matures and doesn't view the world in such an intransigent way, but I have a feeling she will be one of the people who goes to the grave, convinced that she has always had the absolute moral high ground. It seems like a waste of your life to live like that.

Oh, yes she did, mujergorda! I read the entire article, and that was a direct quote from Screamy MeMe!

@JennyLinsky - I know, I read the article too. I'm just so appalled anyone would say that. I mean, really, MeMe Roth doesn't much bother me anymore - she's such a parody of hatred that all that's required to undo her arguments is, well, to hear them. But trivialising sexual violence like that is just despicable.

Sexual assault victims experience PLEASURE????? Sweet mother of God. That alone should tell us what a fruit cake she is. I really, really resent that statement. Fat folks aside, every victim of sexual assault should be pounding on her door.

May 29th, 2009 | Link | Yawn!

MeMe Roth's background is in PR and marketing. It is highly likely she is fronting for some special interests. It is just another type of clandestine marketing that is so pervasive today. Why else does she get so much press coverage??? She is not a real expert, she is not particularly articulate; honestly, she isn't even that pretty. What I would like to see are more people with investigative/journalist backgrounds throughly check her out. Rachel at the F-Word did a great starter job discrediting her current "nutrition" credentials, but I would like to see one that starts even further back. Out her for what she is, a pathetic creature desperate for attention and a buck who is willing to shill for a system even more dysfunctional than herself.

Oh wow, I misread that. I thought she meant that there is pleasure on the part of the sexual offender which is why he does what he does, but just like we shouldn't rape people, we should control ourselves around food too. But now I see what she is saying--that fat people are the victims of the food industry and won't fight back--like sexual assuault survivors. Wow! She *is* messed up.

I wonder what kind of sick bastard her husband is! If I were him, I wouldn't let her near my kids with her bigoted ideas and practises.

geek May 31st, 2009 | Link | Crazy weird but possibly eating.

I found another of her articles that says she eats around 1600 calories a day. She must eat it all at dinner, which I can sympathize with (breakfast and lunch foods aren't nearly as exciting as steak and potatoes, or plates full of pasta).

That said she's obviously nuts in many many other ways, and her silliness morphed to hatred is indefensible.
