An Autobiography
I'm a professor of sociology at UCLA. I teach and do research on gender, law, culture, and politics. Since 2000, I've become fascinated by the politics and science of fat. I've published an article in the International Journal of Epidemiology (with Campos, Ernsberger, Oliver, and Gaesser) entitled: "The epidemiology of overweight and obesity: public health crisis or moral panic?" (hint: we argue it's the latter). I've also published an article (with Kevin Riley, one of my students) on credibility struggles over weight as a medical, public health, and political issue. I've been working on a series of papers that looks at media reporting on "obesity" and on scientific studies of weight and health. Finally, the project I'm most excited about looks at how fat-identified women and activists are using the language of coming out, developed by the LGBT movement, to talk about fat identity.
