I've spent much of my life buying into the barrage of negative messages delivered via my family, the media and society at large regarding my weight and appearance. But no more. At some point I came to the realization that, through no choice of my own, fatness had become a major component of who I am-- and that is a fact that is unlikely to change (even if my weight changes). I've come to see fatness in a positive light now, and in more courageous moments, strive to make others see it that way as well. My current passion is cycling and I like to think that by riding in organized events and even on the streets of my own town (which is not terribly biker friendly in the first place and is even less so for the fat cyclist) I am engaging in a sort of activism by dispelling some of the misconceptions people hold about fat women; Fat women can be powerful, active and speedy. And happy just the way they are.
