Big Fat Facts Big Fat Index

I wish I was joking...

I saw an ad for this show Mike & Molly during How I Met Your Mother last night. At first I was excited...look! Actual fat people on TV! Then I read the premise:

"Police officer Mike Biggs knows his way around the Streets—and the donut shop. As a cop, Mike’s not scared of anything—except dating, so he’s joined Overeaters Anonymous® to lose those extra pounds and gain some Much-needed confidence. When he meets Molly at a meeting, the attraction is immediate, and suddenly Mike is excited about the prospect of a new life. But now he must find the willpower to give up his beloved junk food for the apple of his eye."

Oh BARF. Anyone seen any more of this tripe? Comments?

We very rarely watch network TV (and pretty much never CBS) and then we DVR everything and skip the commercials, so we haven't come across this. Looks sickening Sticking out tongue

Sounds a little bit like a US version of Fat Friends, only without the pre-epipanic mockery and parody of crazy diet and slimming culture that made the former vaguely watchable (it was a long way from FA, as the cast were a bunch of walking fat stereotypes, however some of them got happy endings *without* losing weight or came to realise it wasn't as important as they thought - concepts that would be considered heresy today). One more reason not to watch TV then...

I'll probably watch at least one episode, see where they go with it. Like you-all, I'm not holding out much hope, just a tiny bit.

Let's see... these two meet an an Overeaters Anonymous meeting... but her sister is someone who can eat whatever she wants, without also being considered an overeater?

I really love this actress, and would love to support her career. She was great on Gilmore Girls and played a wonderful character. For that reason alone I will give the show a shot and see where they go with it. It sounds like a nightmare, but they they might surprise me.

MSM's job is to sell products. No doubt it was written to send the viewers to the diet companies. I am sure we have all heard about product placement by now. There are also agencies in Hollywood whose job is to review scripts and integrate marketing into them. If you haven't already, look up The Persuaders on the net and watch it. You can do so via the Frontline web site. This kind of thing is not going away anytime soon, so I think our best bet is to educate the public on propaganda.

You can't tell anything about where they'll take it from that preview. Who knows? There's some hope. At least they're putting cute fat people on TV. I hope they don't focus too much on weight, though.
