Big Fat Facts Big Fat Index

Does This Photo Make Me Look Fat?

Sometimes... well, often times... I run out of words. This AP story about swiped newspapers is a doozy:

Two female college students who bared their bellies at a lacrosse game couldn't stomach a front-page newspaper photo of their stunt and now are in trouble for swiping copies, campus officials said.

They apparently felt the photo made them look fat, the paper's faculty adviser said.

The students face disciplinary action.

I highlighted this little story to show just how far the fear of fat goes. Amazing.

That link is useless without pictures. Laughing out loud Eye-wink I guess they didn't think they'd get caught, but now they are just drawing even more attention to themselves with that stunt.

OK, wait a minute. They bared their midriffs with writing on them, right? I'm not big on she-was-asking-for-it stuff, but in this case, this was not a spontaneous display of flesh. You have to figure that writing a letter on your midriff as part of a display with other similarly bare and lettered midriffs means you want people to look at you and take your picture, that this was part of the plan. If they thought their bodies were "too fat" for such a display, why didn't they refuse to take place in it to begin with? It's not like they didn't know how their midriffs looked like once they were painted -- the painting process would have given them ample (excuse the expression) time for evaluation. Someone desperately needs to get over themselves here. Besides, as prettywendylady says, if these girls are "fat," I'm Malibu Barbie.

Yup. That's a point one of the women who'd bared her belly--but who did not steal any of the papers--makes: "If I went out dressed like that, obviously I don't care that it's in the paper."
And, as another person quoted in the article says: "This has got to be the stupidest reason I ever heard."
So, while the two women who took the papers have a ridiculous obsession with their appearance, it seems most other folks have a realistic view of the whole situation.

The opening line from that Herald story with the pic:

Young women embarrassed by their bulging beer bellies stole nearly 1,000 copies of the Framingham State College newspaper to cover up the front-page exposure.

Bulging beer bellies? Am I looking at the wrong picture? /sarcasm

kathi May 14th, 2007 | Link | sad, too

Yes, it is a very stupid reason to steel papers, but it is kind of sad, too. If these girls truly were upset with their photos, it is sad and reflects what a warped culture we live in when it comes to our notions of what is pretty and what is ugly.
