AV Club Can't Get Past Step One

Oh, look, hipsters being hilarious. They link to a Burger King-produced commercial in the vein of such elite comedies as Punk'd in which a Burger King location pretends to take away the Whopper. Uh. Sure. Hilarious?

Better still, the AV Club ran this with the headline, "Burger King Punks Fatties." And, uh, the video includes lots of... ready?... THIN PEOPLE. And yet they get a free pass? Plus, lazy writing:

Everyone knows that the actual answer to "What happens when you take away Whoppers?" is "Weight loss."

Everyone knows that the actual answer to "What happens when you're really close to deadline and see something that you can pin on the fabricated obesity epidemic?" is "Ask AV Club writer Amelie Gillette."

I've seen a TV version of this commercial twice. At the end some jackass says, "If Burger King stops selling the Whopper, it might as well be Burger Queen."

Because we all know being female is like THE WORST THING EVER.

Although the commercial itself is funny (and I wouldn't classify any of the patrons as "obese") The Hater has a reputation all its own. It's mostly written by interns for The Onion, who don't get paid.

it's kind of shocking to me, in a weird way, that almost every person that they "interviewed" weren't even, um, overweight, let alone obese. i guess i just expected there to be maybe 2 skinny folk and that's it.

i ruled out fast food from my life in '02, but every now and then i totally crave a whopper. it's true!
