Anita Roddick Passes Away

Via Kate Harding, I learned that Anita Roddick has passed away. She was 64.

Back in December of 2001 I was able to interview Ms. Roddick (style-less web archive link) about fat issues and her then-recent experience in a fat suit.

Interestingly there are a few choice quotes from her, advice for our movement.

I'll say this time and time again: claim your language, claim your place in history (women in pre-European history celebrated their generous flesh, comparing it to a fertile landscape complete of mountains and valleys). Make it your knowledge base, as no one today uses the past as a prologue to the present. Find alliances, formal and informal.

Have a voice that is strong, witty and positive. Include the language of everything you write and promote with the style and tone of self-worth and self-knowledge!

Good advices, indeed.

BabySeal September 11th, 2007 | Link | This is so sudden and so

This is so sudden and so unexpected. It's hard for me to find the words to comment this. I feel sad to think that she's no longer on this Earth and ThankFul for her having been among us, teaching us all so much with her vision and her courage.
There's a quote of hers that I'm compelled to think about right now:

"I hate the beauty business. It is a monster industry selling unattainable dreams. It lies. It cheats. It exploits women."

Such truth and power in so few, to-the-point, unashamed words. This is the motto through which I want to remember her.
